How to Identify Incompetent Locksmiths

09/02/2013 Back To Blog

As you are about to receive the services of a locksmith company, it's never too late to determine whether or not they can provide quality and reliable services, even if they are or a mobile locksmith service provider. There are a number of signs that can indicate the real nature of a locksmith. Carefully notice these signs to react appropriately and to avoid getting scammed any further.

Use of an Unmarked Vehicle

Legitimate locksmith companies typically have their easily identifiable vans or vehicles. These vehicles usually bear the company name, address and contact details to help promote the locksmith business of the owner. If the locksmith you called for comes with an unmarked vehicle, you may want to decline the service unless you can ascertain their identity and reliability.

Lack of a Fixed Business Address and Contact Number

Unless it is a reputable mobile locksmith service provider, it is rather suspicious for a locksmith not to associated with a specific business address and contact details. The address and contact numbers are very important especially during instances when there are complaints to be made.

Lack of Proper Tools and Equipment

A locks company or someone who claims to be a provider of lock installation and repair services is likely to be a con if they don't have the right tools and equipment for the job. There are special tools needed to do locksmith work. The absence of these tools can be indicative of a lack of competence, lack of experience, and the intention of trying to scam a customer.

Inability to Present References or Names of Previously Served Customers

It is advisable to ask locksmiths for references or names of previous customers who can vouch for the quality of services they offer. If they can't present any while claiming to be experienced in doing the job, you may want to reconsider letting them do lock installation or fixing for you.

While you can still have the opportunity to avoid a scam or fraudulent service, better take prompt action. Always interview locksmiths first and clarify the terms of the service before letting them do any work. If possible, try to let them sign a written document that details everything about the service to be rendered.
